1) How to Get There

From Quito

Distance: Approximately 150 km.

Transport: You can take a bus from the Quito bus terminal to Ambato, and then a taxi or bus to the entrance of Sangay National Park, where the route to El Altar begins.

Transport: Take a bus from Cuenca to Ambato. From Ambato, follow the same directions to Sangay National Park.

From Guayaquil

Transport: Take a bus from Guayaquil to Ambato. From Ambato, continue to Sangay National Park.

El Altar: Known as Capac Urco in Kichwa, meaning “Sublime Mountain.” It is an extinct volcano with a height of 5,320 m (17,454.07 ft). It is considered one of the most beautiful snow-capped mountains in Ecuador.

Hiking: The hike to the “Collanes Valley” is 12 km, ideal for those who enjoy nature.

Visit to the Laguna Amarilla: Continue to the yellow lagoon the next day, a place famous for its stunning view of the glaciers hanging from the walls of El Altar.
